  • Samual Polanco is no stranger to the power of walls.

    Especially their potential to exclude.

Polanco, a 2022 graduate of the Menaul School — a PC(USA)-related, grades 6-12 college preparatory school located in Albuquerque, New Mexico — has faced walls his entire life.

Throughout his 19 years, Polanco has known and seen walls, both literal and figurative, that separated him and others from being their best selves.

He credits his experience at Menaul, which he entered as a sixth grader, as being instrumental in breaking down life’s many barriers.

Polanco’s Menaul education was made possible, in part, by gifts to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)’s Christmas Joy Offering, which helps Menaul provide scholarships to exceptional students. A cherished Presbyterian tradition since the 1930s, the annual offering distributes gifts equally to the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions and to Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of color.

“When I first came to Menaul, I felt like the school was made for me because I’d been bullied a lot in elementary school, not only by the students but also by their parents,” he said. “When I came here, I felt free of that — able to explore the ideas I wanted to explore, learn what I wanted to learn and just be myself for once in my life. And that’s what Menaul has done for all of us. We can just be ourselves here.”

And although Polanco’s observation applies to Menaul more broadly, he also intended it as a special nod to his friends and classmates, Abigail Nyase and Michael Hedenberg, with whom he spent five days on the U.S.-Mexico border for the school’s traditional “mission week.”

This past April, the 35 members of the class of 2022 became students and volunteers through Frontera de Cristo, whose mission is to build relationships and understanding across borders.

As Polanco headed into the mission week experience with some fears about Covid — which he had the previous November — he was also understandably concerned about confronting the racist legacy and behaviors evoked by the border wall and the ongoing immigration crisis.

“I knew that this was going to be a difficult trip for me personally because my dad is originally from Mexico,” he said. “And the day we were waiting to get on the vans, there were some jokes being made about the border by some other students in the lower grades. That upset me very much, and I told them to knock it off.”

John Sitler, who teaches Upper School religious studies at Menaul and was a senior adviser to the Class of 2022, praised his three former students, Polanco, Nyase and Hedenberg, as among the top leaders in their class. They — and he — were profoundly moved by what they saw and heard during mission week, especially walking the Migrant Trail to the wall.

“It may sound like a cliché, but one thing that the students got out of the experience of seeing this ‘scar’ on the earth, which seems obvious, is that the most dangerous walls are the walls in our minds,” Sitler said.

Then, citing the school’s relatively new motto, “World Smart Education — Educating Students in Mind, Body and Spirit,” he added, “Menaul being ‘World Smart’ means to break down the walls toward our common humanity.”

Wherever the students saw hate and division, Sitler said they were glad to have an opportunity to connect with others “in person,” especially during mission week.

“Jesus is the model for that,” Sitler said.

    • Joy offering to date: $250.00

    • If you are donating with a check, please put “Joy Offering” in the memo line.

  • Psalm 145:17-19

17 The LORD is righteous in all his ways and faithful in all he does.

18 The LORD is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

19 He fulfills the desires of those who fear him; he hears their cry and saves them.

Prayer is nothing else than being on terms of friendship with God. -Teresa of Avila

    You are invited…

The EPC prayer group is a small but dedicated group that meets on Wednesday evenings from roughly 6-7pm. It is a time to open your heart to offer God the praise and prayers of our congregation and those of your own. Barb sends out email requests for any prayers you would like lifted up in the belief that all prayers matter, all prayers are important and all prayers will be heard.

All prayers are kept confidential unless you specify otherwise.

If your request is private or sensitive, you may request that your prayer be limited to Pastor Jane and Barbara. Confirmation emails will be sent affirming that your request was lifted.

As a small church, offering praise and prayers for those who are struggling, no matter the reason, sends a powerful message about the love we share and express for each other. If you feel called to do so, come join us on Wednesday night at 6.

It is our fervent prayer that this ministry is a blessing to the rest of our EPC family and beyond.

  • Children’s Services:

At Emmanuel we offer a “kid’s message” during the early part of the worship service, followed by a “children’s church” in the kid’s classroom for those up to 10 years old or still in elementary school. The message is a short story that usually has some sort of lesson related to it and in children’s church we usually discuss the story in more depth and follow it with a craft or activity that helps the story (and the lesson!) sink in. A nursery is also available for those under 3. We always have two adults with the children and their safety and education is our top priority.

Special Note: There will not be any kids message reading or children’s worship service offered on December 24th as both teachers will be out of town.

  • Thrift (pink spring flowering ground-cover) is available to anyone who wants it.

It has been dug up and is on the ground under the tree by the front office window.

  • THE PERFECT GIFT

When Jesus was born among us, he came as a helpless baby destined to bring joy, peace and salvation to his people. This child, God’s Word made flesh — fully human and fully God — became one of us. One with us. One among us. In all of our vulnerabilities, struggles and triumphs, Jesus became one of us —leading us, knowing us, connecting us to himself and to each other, and offering us his gift of eternal life. The perfect gift.

Through the Christmas Joy Offering, we reflect God’s perfect gift to us, with generous support of church leaders among us — past, present and future — who have pointed us to God. We honor and celebrate leaders like retired pastors, church workers and their families who have faithfully guided and led us but who now find themselves in critical financial need. We honor and celebrate emerging leaders like students in schools and colleges equipping communities of color, who develop leadership skills as they pursue their education and prepare to bring their gifts in service to the world God loves so much.

Jesus’ example as a child born to be among us and lead us to eternal life provides a pattern for us to follow as we celebrate those who have led us in the past and will lead us into the future. Through the Christmas Joy Offering, we come together to support past, present and future leaders, embodying God’s perfect gift to us, Jesus Christ.

If you are donating with a check, please put “Joy Offering” in the memo line.

Helping our fellow humans improves the health, happiness and often the longevity of those who volunteer. However, the blessing can work both ways, as Sharon Connole-Key can attest as both a recipient of and donor to the Christmas Joy Offering.

“The experience of receiving generosity has empowered me to do for others,” Connole-Key says. Battling advanced thyroid cancer since 2001, she was facing the growing medical bills that come with treating long-term diseases. Like so many Americans, she didn’t know where to turn. “No one should have to choose between food and medicine.”

Sharon sought counsel from her pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Liberty, Missouri. “It is hard to ask for help,” says Connole-Key. Together they found help through the Board of Pensions matching grant and the Income Supplement and Housing Supplement programs, funded by the Christmas Joy Offering.

“This is more than a physical blessing, but a deeply spiritual one for me,” says Connole-Key. Retired after serving as a lay worker for 24 years, she considers her gift a blessing to be shared. “I believe in paying forward by giving and tithing to the Christmas Joy Offering to help someone else. It is truly a gift from God.

Inquirers of all ages: Please reach out to Pastor Jane about what it means to be baptized, to be confirmed in the church (if you have already been baptized) or to join the church.

  • Thrift (pink spring flowering ground-cover) is available to anyone who wants it.

It has been dug up and is on the ground under the tree by the front office window.

There is plenty, help yourself or your friend or your neighbor.

Orange Tiger lily (?) bulbs are also available.

Let Faith know this week if you are interested.

  • Joy offering:

    Developing & sustaining our leaders

Each year during the Advent and Christmas season, we turn our eyes to Bethlehem and celebrate the wondrous gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior. God has blessed the Church with incredible leadership in every time and place, but those leaders often need to be supported by their communities as well. This Offering addresses the support needed by some of our leaders, including supporting leadership development for communities of color, and providing support for Presbyterian church workers in their time of need. This has been a Presbyterian commitment for nearly 140 years.

If you are donating with a check, please put “Joy Offering” in the memo line.

  • Philippians 4:6

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

    —————

Prayer is the inner bath of love into which the soul plunges itself. - St. John Vianney

  • Joy offering:

The Christmas Joy Offering, November 26 – December 24, has been a cherished Presbyterian tradition since the 1930s. It is the 4th of the yearly special collections that are received from individuals across the denomination. The Offering distributes gifts equally to the Assistance Program of the Board of Pensions and to Presbyterian-related schools and colleges equipping communities of color. The Assistance Program provides critical financial support to church workers and their families. Presbyterian-related schools and colleges provide education and leadership development while nurturing racial and ethnic heritage. This has been a Presbyterian commitment for nearly 140 years.

If you are donating with a check, please put “Joy Offering” in the memo line.

    Romans 8:26-27

26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

It is our fervent prayer that this ministry is a blessing to the rest of our EPC family and beyond.

  • On Sunday, October 29 during our regular worship service we will celebrate, in our own way, the Feast of All Saints.  In addition to the traditional commemoration of departed Christian saints, known and unknown, we will also celebrate the living spiritual friendships that nurture us along our faith walk.

The Christian celebration of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day stems from a belief that there is a powerful spiritual bond between those in heaven and the living. We also celebrate the special bond between living believers and all we mean to each other.

  • At Emmanuel we offer a “kid’s message” during the early part of the worship service, followed by a “children’s church” in the kid’s classroom for those up to 10 years old or still in elementary school. The message is a short story that usually has some sort of lesson related to it and in children’s church we usually discuss the story in more depth and follow it with a craft or activity that helps the story (and the lesson!) sink in. A nursery is also available for those under 3.

  • I have removed quite a bit of thrift that served as ground cover in the front garden. There are clumps of rooted plants that are available to anyone who wants some. Thrift is the plant that give us such pretty pink flowers in early spring. It is very easy to plant and care for. I also have unearthed a bunch of tiger lily (?) bulbs that are available. The plants have been watered so bring something to carry them home in that is able to contain wet plants.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

    You are invited.

“You cannot pray for someone and hate them at the same time." - Billy Graham

    2024 Generosity/Stewardship Campaign

    September 17, 2023 through October 29, 2023

Our Stewardship season continues until the deadline for submitting your pledge cards – October 29, 2023.

Check out the Stewardship bulletin board in the hallway for ongoing information and inspiration about our Stewardship season.

1 Corinthians 16:1-4 makes clear that our giving should be:

    Periodic (done at regular intervals)

Planned (though of in advance of the giving)

Proportional (giving in proportion to our blessings)

Private (not done to make us known as generous givers)

2 Corinthians 9 tells us that our giving should be:

Generous (giving more rather than less)

Freely given (not done out of guilt or manipulation)

Cheerful (given happily and with rejoicing in God).

    Timeline for 2024 Budget Vote

    • Nov. 3rd – draft of budget sent to session by Treasurer

    • Nov. 19th – session to vote on budget

    • Dec. 3rd – budget presented to congregation

  • With approximately 25 guests in attendance, Derrick and Friends really put on a show.

Amy and Adam Pope alternated singing solos and harmonizing together beautifully to put out a set of songs that were often a throwback to some good old country music. Adam also shared original music he had written based on stories of his life and childhood. Derrick offered up drums, sound machine vocals and all sorts of accompanying noises. If you missed it, you missed out big time. It was a fantastic show! Good music, good laughs, good times. Thank you Derrick!

  • The children’s message this past Sunday was about Moses being placed in the Nile River to be saved by the Pharoah’s daughter. It was a twist of fate that only God could envision for all the players to be in the right place at the right time. The take away lesson from that story for the children’s church was that you CAN make a difference. It does not matter if you are a child or an adult. In this story both a child (Jacobed’s daughter, Miriam) and a young adult (the Pharoah’s daughter) made a difference; Moses survived and grew to be a strong righteous man.

  • Looking for help with the round flower bed in front of church. Is it you?

Growing produce, yes, sure, that’s what we intended. But tadpoles too??? Apparently yes, those too. After 3 Sundays worth of scooping, the water bucket residents have all been rehomed to either the Harpeth River or Bradford Creek.

If your enemies are hungry, give them food to eat. If they are thirsty, give them water to drink. You will heap burning coals on their heads, and the Lord will reward you.

    Matt 5:44-48

Jesus said “But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and on the unjust, too. If you love only those who love you, what good is that? Even corrupt tax collectors do that much. If you are kind only to your friends, how are you different from anyone else? Even pagans do that. But you are to be perfect, even as your Father in heaven is perfect.”

    Christian Education:

Inquirers of all ages:   Please reach out to Pastor Jane about what it means to be baptized, to be confirmed in the church (if you have already been baptized) or to join the church.

For more than a year we have included in this newsletter information about how Presbyterians “do” church. This is the final installment in this series.

For more detailed information and videos on the subject or to see previous week’s questions and answers, please see our website at: epcnashville.com/how-presbyterians-do-church or go to: theocademy.com  The information on our website and the outtakes that will be included in the newsletter come from the Theocademy material created by the Mid-America Synod and provided by the Presbytery of Louisville, KY. If you have any questions about any of the outtakes or website material, please reach out to Pastor Herring or any member of the Session.

    Week 58

Prayer – Jesus taught us not to get all wrapped up in“crafting the perfect prayer”; pray with your heart, not your head; KISS – keep it simple and straightforward; use your everyday language and references that are meaningful to your life.

Matt 6:7-13 (NSRV) – “When you are praying, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. Pray then in this way:

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed [sacred/blessed/holy] be your name. Your

kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day

our daily bread. And forgive us our debts [sins], as we also have forgiven our

debtors [those who have harmed us]. And do not bring us to the time of trial

[judgement] but rescue us from the evil one [satan].”

Q: What are the main six types of prayer?

    A:

    a. Adoration – pray to express our love and praise to God for who God is.

    b. Confession – pray to admit the fact that we have lived in a way that runs counter to God’s plan, both for our own lives and as part of the world at large.

    c. Devotion - pray to affirm and celebrate God’s ownership of our lives.

    d. Intercession - pray to ask God to step in and take control of a situation we (or others we know) are facing (this is to be done with the mind of Christ – i.e. you may ask for a specific/preferred outcome, but acknowledge that God’s will is preeminent; Christ asked for the cup to pass him by, but that God’s will be done).

    e. Supplication - pray to ask God to provide us with what we need.

    f. Thanksgiving - pray to praise God for what God has done, both in our own lives and in the  world.

    Children’s Education:

You never know what will happen during the children’s message.  Sometimes they are eager to come sit up front, but ummm, sometimes they are not.  We love your little girl, Mollie!  The story being read was titled “A Hard Story”, which indeed it was.  Workers were beaten, and killed, a story that was hard to hear (and read).  The ending of the story was that Jesus forgives us, even those who do bad deeds. In children’s church we painted canvas bags, always fun.  These are “treat bags”  that the children can put special sayings in to help them remember they are not alone.  More on this next week.
