Coming up soon, take part in conversation about uniting the Bodies of Christ:
As a follow up to a previous meeting, there will be a conversation with Adam Buzard, who is part of the Operation Andrew Group. This will be hosted by the 2nd Presbyterian Church on April 18th from 9-11 am. as he works to fulfill the mission of uniting the bodies of Christ as they partner with local churches. 2nd Pres is located at 3511 Belmont Blvd and the conversation will center around “The State of Nashville”. It is open to anyone (pastors, elders, church volunteers) interested in knowing what others think of our church. The event is this scheduled for tomorrow.

We still need help with refreshments this Sunday as well as Sept 1st. Please check and see if you are available.
-  The kids message focused on going back to school jitters.
-  The overlying theme was that God is always with you; you have your very best friend with you all the time.
-  We painted rocks and wrote “feel good” words on them.
-  The kids placed them where others could find them and feel good when they read the messages.
* The Takop garden plot and others are overrun with little squash bugs like this one.
* The best way to get rid of them is to hand pick and place them in a bucket of soapy water.
* We need a few folks to volunteer for bug removal duty after church on Sunday. Can you help?

VBS---Next week... What to know...
1. -  The theme of VBS this year is The Living Water
  -  We will meet Wed. July 31st from 1-5 pm at EPC
  -  Eat lunch before you come on the 31st (1-5 pm) and plan to stay for pizza from 5- 6.
    The last two VBS meetings were a little un-traditional but took place despite the many challenges that daily schedules and Mother Nature threw at us. From the nice calm lazy river and the warm welcoming sunshine that was perfect for 6 yr old Jaxon (inside the inner tube)...
... to the overcast skies with a faster flowing, and a little bit deeper river suitable for the older girls. The rain filled stream provided a stimulating, (shall we say cold!?) current for these two (next page) who waded and splashed, slipped and slid and managed to get 100% wet as they named undesirable behaviors and let the river wash their sins away!
A HUGE thank you goes out to Val. Her retirement is our blessing. Check out the upkeeping that she has done in all the gardens around the building. Read that again...ALL the gardens have been given a little extra care over the past week. Thank her when you see her next.

3rd Annual Gateway to Higher Education Scholarship:

If that’s not your thing but you still want to help, look these over and see if there is a fit...There are a few roles that you can take to help prepare for the event. Can you help? Please email Felisha.
-  Auction items - We are seeking donated gift cards, experiences, and memberships for our silent auction. Here is a list of last year's items (no longer available for bids) to help you brainstorm. If you know a store owner or manager, could you ask them to donate? Felisha can send you a template! We need items by the end of August.
-  Amateur photographer - Are you the person everyone in your friend group asks to take their Instagram photos? We need help staging our silent auction items. Photos are helpful for our virtual and in-person auction. (August and early September)
-  Sponsorships - Can your business help sponsor our event? We need $20,000 in additional support before the big night! Any gift is appreciated, and sponsorship benefits start at $2,500.
-  Volunteers on 9/13/24 (day) - We need volunteers to help load items at Oasis and unload items at Marathon Music Works between 1 - 4 p.m.
-  Volunteers on 9/13/24 (eve) - We need volunteers to help at the event between 5 - 10 p.m. You will get a free dinner from us! We have seated opportunities and opportunities for folks who can stand for long periods (with breaks).
-  Volunteers on 9/13/24 (eve) - We need load out volunteers. You will help pack up cars between 9 - 10:30 p.m. If you arrive earlier and stay for the program, you will also receive a free dinner.
  Volunteer Recruitment Season!
  We are gearing up to interview and train volunteers for the 2024 - 2025 school year. If you are interested in any of the roles below, please email us! We serve youth from many diverse backgrounds, and we want to make sure our volunteers represent the diversity of the young people we engage. Volunteers must be 18-years or older and out of high school.
  Bike Workshop: You don't have to be an expert cyclist or bike technician to help in our interactive, hands-on workshops. Volunteers will learn the skills with the young people! Workshops are at Metro schools or Oasis during the weekday (morning, mid-day, or afternoon).
  OCC Tutors: We need tutors at our Nashville State campuses (especially Southeast in Antioch and North Davidson in Madison). The most needed subjects include math, basic and health sciences,
and writing. Tutors serve weekly or at least twice a month for 2 hour shifts between Monday - Thursday.
Shelter Tutors: We need math tutors for our young people in the Shelter (ages 13 - 17). Shifts would be at least two hours twice per month between 9 a.m. - noon.
Recurring Lunch Volunteers: Can your friend group or your work team sign-up to deliver a home- made lunch once a month on Monday or Thursday? Volunteers are the only reason we can serve lunch three times a week in the Outreach Center, and we appreciate each person who contributes!

Fellowship:
-  The fellowship activity, “Drawing Biblical Water Stories” this month was in the form of an art project that took place at EPC today.
-  We read about different Bible stories dealing with water and discussed what images came to mind in each story. For example... Jesus turned water into wine, Jesus met the woman at the well, Jesus calmed the storm and Jesus walked on water...
-  We divided into small groups, each group got new pastel crayons and a long sheet of black paper and had 15 minutes to work their magic.
-  The results are taped on the hallway wall.
-  I encourage everyone to check them out and identify which Bible story is depicted.

As a follow up to a previous meeting, there will be a conversation with Adam Buzard, who is part of the Operation Andrew Group. This will be hosted by the 2nd Presbyterian Church on April 18th from 9-11 am. as he works to fulfill the mission of uniting the bodies of Christ as they partner with local churches. 2nd Pres is located at 3511 Belmont Blvd and the conversation will center around “The State of Nashville”. It is open to anyone (pastors, elders, church volunteers) interested in knowing what others think of our church. The event is this scheduled for tomorrow.

VBS---Next week... What to know...
1. -  The theme of VBS this year is The Living Water
  -  We will meet Wed. July 31st from 1-5 pm at EPC
  -  Eat lunch before you come on the 31st (1-5 pm) and plan to stay for pizza from 5- 6.
    The last two VBS meetings were a little un-traditional but took place despite the many challenges that daily schedules and Mother Nature threw at us. From the nice calm lazy river and the warm welcoming sunshine that was perfect for 6 yr old Jaxon (inside the inner tube)...
... to the overcast skies with a faster flowing, and a little bit deeper river suitable for the older girls. The rain filled stream provided a stimulating, (shall we say cold!?) current for these two (next page) who waded and splashed, slipped and slid and managed to get 100% wet as they named undesirable behaviors and let the river wash their sins away!
A HUGE thank you goes out to Val. Her retirement is our blessing. Check out the upkeeping that she has done in all the gardens around the building. Read that again...ALL the gardens have been given a little extra care over the past week. Thank her when you see her next.

Everyone is invited to work on an ‘all age, no skill needed’ art project in the Sanctuary July 31.
-  VBS kids and adults will meet from 1-5, supper til 6 pm.
-  Everyone else is invited to join them from 3- 5, with supper til 6
-  It promises to be a fun afternoon filled with laughter and light-
  hearted conversation as we work on some art mural designs
  together, followed by pizza dinner.
-  The EPC prayer service will be at 6 pm for those who wish to stay.

-  The youth will be meeting from 1-5 pm. in the EPC Sanctuary.
-  They will be doing an art activity that is appropriate for all ages, no skill necessary.
-  The congregation is invited to join in from 3-5 pm, followed by pizza dinner for all.
-  The EPC prayer service will be at 6 pm for those who wish to stay.

Coming up soon, take part in conversation about uniting the Bodies of Christ:
As a follow up to a previous meeting, there will be a conversation with Adam Buzard, who is part of the Operation Andrew Group. This will be hosted by the 2nd Presbyterian Church on April 18th from 9-11 am. as he works to fulfill the mission of uniting the bodies of Christ as they partner with local churches. 2nd Pres is located at 3511 Belmont Blvd and the conversation will center around “The State of Nashville”. It is open to anyone (pastors, elders, church volunteers) interested in knowing what others think of our church. The event is this scheduled for tomorrow.

1. VBS--- What to know...
  -  The theme of VBS this year is The Living Waters
  -  We will meet on Wednesdays, July 17 and 24 from 10-2 and on Wed. 31st from 1-5 pm
  -  Bring a sack lunch for the 17th and the 24th.
  -  Eat before you come on the 31st (1-5pm) but plan to stay for pizza after.
  -  The congregation is invited on the 31st from 3pm – 5pm for activities, fellowship and
    pizza
  -  Please let Faith or Ginia know if you will be attending.
I will be gone for the next few weeks and the gardens will need tending.
1. There is a sign-up sheet by the front entrance and Ginia has offered to be
  the point person to coordinate what needs doing.
2. watering (about an hour each time)
3. weeding (not hard but involves bending down to pull grass)
4. checking for health of plants (spray for bugs or remove caterpillars)
5. staking and training plants to climb the trellis (as needed: tomatoes, cucumbers and squash)
6. harvesting (the fun part)
7. delivering to maple village (as needed)

TWe are currently working up plans for VBS on 3 Wednesdays in July.

 There was another special treat awaiting us during the church hour.
 We were treated to a very special and moving presentation from Anne K as she shared
her Faith Journey with us.
 In front of family and friends, she spoke of her struggle with seemingly never-ending life
challenges and her need to call upon God for strength and the building of her character.
 There were many trials and constant life upheavals but with help from husband Scott, and
her faith, they pushed through together and made their struggles bearable and doable.

As a follow up to a previous meeting, there will be a conversation with Adam Buzard, who is part of the Operation Andrew Group. This will be hosted by the 2nd Presbyterian Church on April 18th from 9-11 am. as he works to fulfill the mission of uniting the bodies of Christ as they partner with local churches. 2nd Pres is located at 3511 Belmont Blvd and the conversation will center around “The State of Nashville”. It is open to anyone (pastors, elders, church volunteers) interested in knowing what others think of our church. The event is this scheduled for tomorrow.

The Montreat Youth Conference will be taking place June 9 -15; Teddy, Jefferson and Annalease are all set to go this year. The chaperones will be Scott Huie and Barbara Halverstadt. EPC applied for, and was granted, conference scholarships for all 3 youth and EPC will be picking up any costs for housing and food during the week.
33rd Annual Gateway to Higher Education Scholarship:
 Scholarship will launch this month
 Invitations to apply will be sent to EPC members no later than May 31
 Applications and essays are due by the June 30th
 Evaluations will be due by July 20th Blood Drive – update: as of 5/20/24 we have 21 donor sign-ups! Thanks to all who have spread the word, signed up to donate blood or convinced others to do so. Because several donors have signed up for Power Red donations, which count as two donations, our Blood Drive will go on as scheduled.

We will partner again with the Center for Health and Wellness and invite the residents of the center to enjoy our lunch offerings, ice cream and southern hospitality. EPC fellowship/outreach budget will supply the burgers and dogs so bring your best pot luck sides and salads. For the newbies of the church, this has turned into a hard-core competition for the best tasting home-made ice cream. It is a competition complete with both underhanded and the overly obvious cheating, all in good sport. Plan to come hungry!

As a follow up to a previous meeting, there will be a conversation with Adam Buzard, who is part of the Operation Andrew Group. This will be hosted by the 2nd Presbyterian Church on April 18th from 9-11 am. as he works to fulfill the mission of uniting the bodies of Christ as they partner with local churches. 2nd Pres is located at 3511 Belmont Blvd and the conversation will center around “The State of Nashville”. It is open to anyone (pastors, elders, church volunteers) interested in knowing what others think of our church. The event is this scheduled for tomorrow.

• The children, big and small, (all those under 18!) are invited to participate in a special practice time for something being planned on Palm Sunday. If possible, I need parents to allow their children to come to the kid’s classroom when Jane finishes her sermon, sometime during the offertory til the end of church. Thank you.
• At Emmanuel we offer a “kid’s message” during the early part of the worship service, followed by a “children’s church” in the kid’s classroom for those up to 10 years old or still in elementary school. The message is a short story that usually has some sort of lesson related to it and in children’s church we usually discuss the story in more depth and follow it with a craft or activity that helps the story (and the lesson!) sink in.
• A nursery is available for those under 3.
• We offer a “chat time ” in a safe space for those over 10 who want some time to share what is on their mind.
• We always have two adults with the children and their safety and education is our top priority.

 If anybody wants one, speak to me on Sunday.
 Even little Ms Ellie planted 4 potato plants last Sunday. It’s not hard.
To those of you (children and youth) who do have gardens, please remember to check on them when you are at church on Sundays. They most likely need watering, may need a little weeding, and could use your help guiding your vertical plants up their trellis. These gardens are your responsibility, I will love your plant babies several times during the week. I will help you with what you need on Sundays, but if you are there, you need to water and weed every time.

 We must meet a minimum of 22 donors by May 21. If that number is not met, the Red Cross will cancel our blood drive.

Pentecost Special Offering:

 This Sunday is the last week that the Pentecost Special Offering will be collected.
 $180 has been given this year so far compared with $444.17 that we collected last year.
 40% of the Pentecost offering stays with EPC to be used to help offset the costs of sending
our youth to the Montreat Youth Conference, so please give generously.
The Montreat Youth Conference will be taking place June 9 -15; Teddy, Jefferson and Annalease are all set to go this year. The chaperones will be Scott Huie and Barbara Halverstadt. EPC applied for, and was granted, conference scholarships for all 3 youth and EPC will be picking up any costs for housing and food during the week.
43rd Annual Gateway to Higher Education Scholarship:
 Scholarship will launch this month
 Invitations to apply will be sent to EPC members by the end of May
 Applications and essays are due by the June 30th
 Evaluations will be due by July 20th
 Awarding of the Scholarship will be done immediately after services on July 28th

United Way:
The United Way tax workshops were, by all accounts, a successful collaboration this year, serving the community and several of members of our congregation. We will soon be able to report on the exact numbers of community members who were served. Stay tuned.
Pentecost Special Offering:
We are now in the Pentecost Special Offering season (April 1st – May 19th ). Last year we raised $444.17 (of which $177.66 (40%) stayed with EPC to offset costs of sending youth to Montreat).
Housekeeping:
There is a need for a deep spring cleaning of EPC. There is a list of chores that need doing being posted on the whiteboard in the adult classroom. Please look at the list and if you know an area that needs attention, please add it to the list.
There was a special request from Jane last Sunday, that if you spot a folding chair needing cleaning, please take it to her office.

The United Way tax workshops were, by all accounts, a successful collaboration this year, serving the community and several of members of our congregation. We will soon be able to report on the exact numbers of community members who were served. Stay tuned.
Pentecost Special Offering:
We are now in the Pentecost Special Offering season (April 1st – May 19th ). Last year we raised $444.17 (of which $177.66 (40%) stayed with EPC to offset costs of sending youth to Montreat).
Housekeeping:
There is a need for a deep spring cleaning of EPC. There is a list of chores that need doing being posted on the whiteboard in the adult classroom. Please look at the list and if you know an area that needs attention, please add it to the list.
There was a special request from Jane last Sunday, that if you spot a folding chair needing cleaning, please take it to her office.
Financial Support for Missions
Call it what you will, for a small church we are involved in many different local ministries, missions or outreach programs.
Funding for these giving programs come from various places, one of these places is you!

As a follow up to a previous meeting, there will be a conversation with Adam Buzard, who is part of the Operation Andrew Group. This will be hosted by the 2nd Presbyterian Church on April 18th from 9-11 am. as he works to fulfill the mission of uniting the bodies of Christ as they partner with local churches. 2nd Pres is located at 3511 Belmont Blvd and the conversation will center around “The State of Nashville”. It is open to anyone (pastors, elders, church volunteers) interested in knowing what others think of our church. The event is this scheduled for tomorrow.

• The children, big and small, (all those under 18!) are invited to participate in a special practice time for something being planned on Palm Sunday. If possible, I need parents to allow their children to come to the kid’s classroom when Jane finishes her sermon, sometime during the offertory til the end of church. Thank you.
• At Emmanuel we offer a “kid’s message” during the early part of the worship service, followed by a “children’s church” in the kid’s classroom for those up to 10 years old or still in elementary school. The message is a short story that usually has some sort of lesson related to it and in children’s church we usually discuss the story in more depth and follow it with a craft or activity that helps the story (and the lesson!) sink in.
• A nursery is available for those under 3.
• We offer a “chat time ” in a safe space for those over 10 who want some time to share what is on their mind.
• We always have two adults with the children and their safety and education is our top priority.

To those of you (children and youth) who do have gardens, please remember to check on them when you are at church on Sundays. They most likely need watering, need a little weeding, and could use your help guiding your vertical plants up their trellis. These gardens are your responsibility, I will love your plant babies several times during the week. I will help you with what you need on Sundays, but if you are there, you need to water and weed every time.

The 1st Annual Ladies High Tea Party was quite an event, a wonderful way to bring together old friends and celebrate meeting new ones. So many thanks go to so many people for so many things. I don’t know who did what, but Sue with her caligraphy, precious china tea cups, and cooking (I only know this because I sat beside her!) ranks high on the list. Other names of major helpers and donors are Diana, Ginia, and Marilyn. There may be others I am missing but I was on the receiving end of all the hospitality and do not know who quite did what. It was an amazing event to pull off and it was wonderfully done. The tea, of course, the delicate party bites, the lovely hats and lace gloves, the beautifully decorated tables made this an event not to be missed.

Worship: Communion Sunday
Last Sunday was Easter Sunday. It was a very emotion-filled service ranging from tears of grief to tears of exultation.
The Sunday prior was Palm Sunday, another busy day in the life of the church as we mourned for what we know is coming.
There are many pictures that were sent to me and a sampling of them are printed at the end of this newsletter.
This Sunday is the first Sunday of the month and as such, we will offer communion to anyone wishing to partake.

We talk to God about a lot of things, focusing on the prayers of our congregation and our community, but including prayers for the world and everything in it. We rejoice in the fellowship and the relational connection with God, and share the gift of prayer with you all.

1.Gosh Darn Gravel Gathering
East Nashville Beer Festival
Saturday 4/13/2 Proceeds from this beer festival will benefit the Oasis Bike Workshop!
Volunteers receive an event glass and our adoration. We need volunteers in an early shift or later afternoon shift. Everyone will get a short break to enjoy the festival; however, there is no early entry.
11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Volunteers will assist with check-in lines, hand out glasses, clean-up, lift and empty buckets. Many roles involve standing and can be made accessible for sitting as needed.
2:20 – 5:20 P.M. Volunteers will hand out glasses, clean-up, lift and empty buckets, and give out wristbands. Many roles involve standing and can be made accessible for sitting as needed.

Nueva Vida:
A request has come in for help from our Hispanic neighbors at Nueva Vida, a church we have partnered with in the past. They operate a food pantry that provides other necessities as well. Think of this as a Lenten “give to” item instead of a Lenten “give up” item. The following starred items are the most needed:
*Diapers (both those for children and for adults)
*Feminine hygiene products
*Laundry detergent and fabric softener
Cooking oil
Rice
*Red beans, black beans
*Tortilla corn flour
*Cornmeal
Beds of all sizes
Powdered milk
Warm weather gear - coats/hats/gloves/warm socks

This Sunday will be the last day to contribute to the collection for Nueva Vida.
Thank you so much for helping us meet this need and share in community.

• People with social media savvy to help make a plan for getting the word out
• People with creative skills to help develop flyers, messaging, and thank you tokens
• People with extensive networks that can help recruit donors
• People willing to help on the day of the drive to check in donors, make sure donors are offered thank you tokens, help place signage and help with clean up. Coming up soon, take part in uniting the Bodies of Christ:
As a follow up to a previous meeting, there will be a conversation with Adam Buzard, who is part of the Operation Andrew Group. This will be hosted by the 2nd Presbyterian Church on April 18th from 9-11 am. as he works to fulfill the mission of uniting the bodies of Christ as they partner with local churches. 2nd Pres is located at 3511 Belmont Blvd and the conversation will center around “The State of Nashville”. It is open to anyone (pastors, elders, church volunteers) interested in knowing what others think of our church, please RSVP to Gregory.midtennpres@gmail.com

 Teddy, Jefferson and Annalease will all be attending the 2024 Montreat Youth Conference, June 9-15. Teddy and Jefferson will be traveling with Scott Huie and Annalease will be traveling with Barbara. Costs for the youths’ participation will be covered by EPC.
• The children, big and small, (all those under 18!) are invited to participate in a special practice time for something being planned on Palm Sunday. If possible, I need parents to allow their children to come to the kid’s classroom when Jane finishes her sermon, sometime during the offertory til the end of church. Thank you.
• At Emmanuel we offer a “kid’s message” during the early part of the worship service, followed by a “children’s church” in the kid’s classroom for those up to 10 years old or still in elementary school. The message is a short story that usually has some sort of lesson related to it and in children’s church we usually discuss the story in more depth and follow it with a craft or activity that helps the story (and the lesson!) sink in.
• A nursery is available for those under 3.
• We offer a “chat time ” in a safe space for those over 10 who want some time to share what is on their mind.
• We always have two adults with the children and their safety and education is our top priority.

The kids still need the following items to keep doing preliminary plantings and to prep for future gardening success. If you have any of the following we could use them, as we are trying hard to do gardening and recycling for free. Pease put them on the table in the classroom:

Inquirers of all ages:
• Please reach out to Pastor Jane about what it means to be baptized, to be confirmed in the church (if you have already been baptized) or to join the church.
• Lent begins next week on Wednesday February 14th. Pastor Jane will offer a Lenten service complete with the marking of a cross on one’s forehead if you so choose. This is done as a way to pronounce the importance of Jesus Christ in your life.
• After the Lenten service is complete, there will be a meal served and a short Lectio Divina which is comprised of short bible readings, contemplation and a time to listen to what has turned out in past times to be deep meaningful conversations. At 7 pm there will be a short simple meal served.
• Please let Jane know if you are willing to bring one of the Lenten meals for sharing. You can reach her at 615.818.9727.
