VBS---Next week... What to know...
The theme of VBS this year is The Living Water
We will meet Wed. July 31st from 1-5 pm at EPC
Eat lunch before you come on the 31st (1-5 pm) and plan to stay for pizza from 5- 6.
The last two VBS meetings were a little un-traditional but took place despite the many challenges that daily schedules and Mother Nature threw at us. From the nice calm lazy river and the warm welcoming sunshine that was perfect for 6 yr old Jaxon (inside the inner tube)...
... to the overcast skies with a faster flowing, and a little bit deeper river suitable for the older girls. The rain filled stream provided a stimulating, (shall we say cold!?) current for these two (next page) who waded and splashed, slipped and slid and managed to get 100% wet as they named undesirable behaviors and let the river wash their sins away!
-
A HUGE thank you goes out to the members of the garden crew. Extra hands to water, tend, weed, harvest and deliver have made this endeavor a bigger success than it ever was. You are all very much appreciated.

We welcomed 5 new members to EPC last Sunday. What a celebration!
Our family is growing!
We welcomed Anne K., Doug & Sue H. and Fred & Karen R. as new members of EPC this past Sunday. Check next page for pictures!
There was another special treat awaiting us during the church hour.
We were treated to a very special and moving presentation from Anne K as she shared
her Faith Journey with us.
In front of family and friends, she spoke of her struggle with seemingly never-ending life
challenges and her need to call upon God for strength and the building of her character.
There were many trials and constant life upheavals but with help from husband Scott, and
her faith, they pushed through together and made their struggles bearable and doable.

Quotes about prayer:
Satan cannot deny but that great wonders have been wrought by prayer. As the spirit of prayer goes up, so his kingdom goes down. William Gurnall
Job 42:10 (NIV)
10 After Job had prayed for his friends, the LORD restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before.
Invitation to Prayer Group services: Prayer is a gift from God, like life itself. Come join us some Wednesday evening from 6:00-7:00 pm (or so) to have both individual and group conversations with the Creator of the universe (how utterly cool is that!). It doesn’t have to be a long-term commitment, we enjoy visitors. We talk to God about a lot of things, focusing on the prayers of our congregation and our community, but including prayers for the world and everything in it. We rejoice in the fellowship and the relational connection with God, and share the gift of prayer with you all. EPC prayer group

• The children, big and small, (all those under 18!) are invited to participate in a special practice time for something being planned on Palm Sunday. If possible, I need parents to allow their children to come to the kid’s classroom when Jane finishes her sermon, sometime during the offertory til the end of church. Thank you.
• At Emmanuel we offer a “kid’s message” during the early part of the worship service, followed by a “children’s church” in the kid’s classroom for those up to 10 years old or still in elementary school. The message is a short story that usually has some sort of lesson related to it and in children’s church we usually discuss the story in more depth and follow it with a craft or activity that helps the story (and the lesson!) sink in.
• A nursery is available for those under 3.
• We offer a “chat time ” in a safe space for those over 10 who want some time to share what is on their mind.
• We always have two adults with the children and their safety and education is our top priority.

AND just so you know...
There are 2 garden plots available.
If anybody wants one, speak to me on Sunday.
Even little Ms Ellie planted 4 potato plants last Sunday. It’s not hard.
To those of you (children and youth) who do have gardens, please remember to check on them when you are at church on Sundays. They most likely need watering, may need a little weeding, and could use your help guiding your vertical plants up their trellis. These gardens are your responsibility, I will love your plant babies several times during the week. I will help you with what you need on Sundays, but if you are there, you need to water and weed every time.

Matthew 26:41 (NIV)
41 Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Quotes about prayer:
“It is not enough to begin to pray, nor to pray aright; nor is it enough to continue for a time to pray; but we must patiently, believingly, continue in prayer until we obtain an answer; and further we have not only to continue in prayer unto the end, but we have also to believe that God does hear us, and will answer our prayers. Most frequently we fail in not continuing in prayer until the blessing is obtained, and in not expecting the blessing. ~~ George Mueller Prayer is a gift from God, like life itself. Join us for fellowship and a fresh cup of coffee around the kitchen window after service! Thanks to the following for their offering:
May 19 – Claire
If you would like to sign up, there is a list on the table next to the entrance/exit door from the sanctuary. Please pick a date that works for you. Sign up and if you remember, it is helpful to let me (Faith) know. The 3rd Annual Ice Cream Social and Pot Luck will be taking place on June 9 under the pavilion. We will partner again with the Center for Health and Wellness and invite the residents of the center to enjoy our lunch offerings, ice cream and southern hospitality. Please bring your best pot luck sides and salads. For the newbies of the church, this has turned into a hard-core competition for the best tasting home-made ice cream. It is a competition complete with both underhanded and the overly obvious cheating, all in good sport. Plan to come hungry!

James 5:16 (NIV)
16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
Quotes about prayer:
“You know the value of prayer: it is precious beyond all price. Never, never neglect it.” ~~Sir Thomas Buxton
Prayer is a gift from God, like life itself. Come join us some Wednesday evening from 6:00-7:00 pm (or so) to have both individual and group conversations with the Creator of the universe (how utterly cool is that!). It doesn’t have to be a long- term commitment, we enjoy visitors. We talk to God about a lot of things, focusing on the prayers of our congregation and our community, but including prayers for the world and everything in it. We rejoice in the fellowship and the relational connection with God, and share the gift of prayer with you all. EPC prayer group

Pentecost Special Offering:
We are now in the Pentecost Special Offering season (April 1st – May 19th ). Last year we raised $444.17 (of which $177.66 (40%) stayed with EPC to offset costs of sending youth to Montreat).

There is a need for a deep spring cleaning of EPC. There is a list of chores that need doing being posted on the whiteboard in the adult classroom. Please look at the list and if you know an area that needs attention, please add it to the list.
There was a special request from Jane last Sunday, that if you spot a folding chair needing cleaning, please take it to her office.

The 1st Annual Ladies High Tea Party was quite an event, a wonderful way to bring together old friends and celebrate meeting new ones. So many thanks go to so many people for so many things. I don’t know who did what, but Sue with her caligraphy, precious china tea cups, and cooking (I only know this because I sat beside her!) ranks high on the list. Other names of major helpers and donors are Diana, Ginia, and Marilyn. There may be others I am missing but I was on the receiving end of all the hospitality and do not know who quite did what. It was an amazing event to pull off and it was wonderfully done. The tea, of course, the delicate party bites, the lovely hats and lace gloves, the beautifully decorated tables made this an event not to be missed.

2 Corinthians 1:11 (NIV)
11 as you help us by your prayers. Then many will give thanks on our behalf for the gracious favor granted us in answer to the prayers of many.
Quotes about prayer:
Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work. Oswald Chambers
Prayer is a gift from God, like life itself. Come join us some Wednesday evening from 6:00- 7:00 pm (or so) to have both individual and group conversations with the Creator of the universe (how utterly cool is that!).

United Way:
The United Way tax workshops were, by all accounts, a successful collaboration this year, serving the community and several of members of our congregation. We will soon be able to report on the exact numbers of community members who were served. Stay tuned.
Pentecost Special Offering:
We are now in the Pentecost Special Offering season (April 1st – May 19th ). Last year we raised $444.17 (of which $177.66 (40%) stayed with EPC to offset costs of sending youth to Montreat).
Housekeeping:
There is a need for a deep spring cleaning of EPC. There is a list of chores that need doing being posted on the whiteboard in the adult classroom. Please look at the list and if you know an area that needs attention, please add it to the list.
There was a special request from Jane last Sunday, that if you spot a folding chair needing cleaning, please take it to her office.

Nueva Vida:
A request has come in for help from our Hispanic neighbors at Nueva Vida, a church we have partnered with in the past. They operate a food pantry that provides other necessities as well. Think of this as a Lenten “give to” item instead of a Lenten “give up” item. The following starred items are the most needed:
*Diapers (both those for children and for adults)
*Feminine hygiene products
*Laundry detergent and fabric softener
Cooking oil
Rice
*Red beans, black beans
*Tortilla corn flour
*Cornmeal
Beds of all sizes
Powdered milk
Warm weather gear - coats/hats/gloves/warm socks
This Sunday will be the last day to contribute to the collection for Nueva Vida.
Thank you so much for helping us meet this need and share in community.

30 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me… 32 so that I may come to you with joy, by God’s will, and in your company be refreshed. 33 The God of peace be with you all. Amen.
Quotes about prayer:
I saw more clearly than ever, that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was, to have my soul happy in the Lord. ~ George Mueller
You are invited…
Prayer is a gift from God, like life itself. Come join us some Wednesday evening from 6:00-7:00 pm (or so) to have both individual and group conversations with the Creator of the universe (how utterly cool is that!).

Looking to Holy Week:
· Maundy Thursday, March 28th at 6:30 Supper of the Lamb at EPC:
o John and Terry Denton provide lamb and we all bring side dishes and desserts.
o We break bread together, have a brief liturgy of prayers and readings, and share memories and stories
o Just as Jesus gathered with his beloved disciples, we gather ourselves up in His presence to break bread and remember.
· Good Friday, March 29th at 6:30 in the sanctuary:
o We will have a quiet, contemplative service of Word, Prayer, and Lamentation, as we acknowledge the continuing ramifications of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ for the salvation of the world.
o Bring the burdens of your heart and put them upon the cross of Jesus Christ at this Good Friday service.
· Easter Sunday March 31, 10 a.m.
o Bring fresh flowers to place on the cross on Easter Sunday and we will see this cross flower as we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord.
o Enjoy special music, Easter tidings and treats.
-
We will have a cross outside the front entrance of the church. Please bring flowers to help decorate it as we celebrate the resurrection of Christ from his earthly grave. It is covered with wire so you can easily weave your flower stems through to secure them in place. They can be from your yard, from the side of the road, of from the local grocery or florist. Yay, it is a glorious day. We will take pictures of you by the cross after service if you wish. 2022 Easter Cross
Last Sunday we celebrated Palm Sunday as we gathered outside for our annual Procession of the Palms in memory of the day Jesus approached Jerusalem, greeted by shouts of “Hosanna, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord”
As a sidenote, the Palms that we use for this event were obtained through a partnership with the Presbyterian Hunger Program. They are harvested, processed and sold for use in Presbyterian churches across the USA. One more way the church is trying to be a good steward of this land that we are watching over.

OGHS
One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) is a significant initiative within the Presbyterian community. It is one of 4 special collections that are brought to the congregation in a calendar year, the others being Peace and Global Witness, Christmas Joy Offering and the Pentecost Offering. Typically received during Lent, each gift to OGHS supports hunger relief, development, and disaster assistance Your contribution makes a difference in the lives of those in need. 100% of what is donated will go to the Mid-Tennessee Presbytery to be sent where it is needed.. Although donations to any of these programs can be made at any time, next Sunday is the last day to contribute to the OGHS collections for 2024

March 27.
Looking to Holy Week:
• Maundy Thursday, March 28th at 6:30 Supper of the Lamb at EPC:
o John and Terry Denton provide lamb and we all bring side dishes and desserts.
o We break bread together, have a brief liturgy of prayers and readings, and share memories and stories
o Just as Jesus gathered with his beloved disciples, we gather ourselves up in His presence to break bread and remember
• Good Friday, March 29th at 6:30 in the sanctuary:
o We will have a quiet, contemplative service of Word, Prayer, and Lamentation, as we acknowledge the continuing ramifications of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ for the salvation of the world.
o Bring the burdens of your heart and put them upon the cross of Jesus Christ at this Good Friday service.
• Easter Sunday March 31:
o Bring fresh flowers to place on the cross on Easter Sunday and we will see this same cross flower as we celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord.

Luke 6:27-28 (NIV)
27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.
Quotes about prayer:
Prayer is not monologue, but dialogue; God’s voice is its most essential part. Listening to God’s voice is the secret of the assurance that He will listen to mine. ~ Andy Murray
You are invited…

For 75 years, it has allowed Presbyterians to extend God’s love to our neighbors in need across the globe. This program addresses critical issues such as disaster relief, hunger prevention, and community development. Below is a small sample of the help that’s been offered:
1. Three Programs Supported by OGHS:
o Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA): Provides initial disaster response and ongoing community development, ensuring safety, sustenance, and hope for affected individuals.
o Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP): Works to relieve hunger by distributing food and seeds, impacting 22 countries.
o Self-Development of People: Empowers communities to break free from poverty and oppression.
2. Your Impact:
o PDA has granted $3.1 million in the United States and 35 countries.
o PHP has given 90 grants in 22 countries, distributing over 55,000 pounds of seeds and seedlings for farming.
o 228,318 Gift of the Heart Kits and Blankets have been distributed.
o 291 certified PC (USA) Earth Care congregations contribute to caring for creation.
o 875 chickens were distributed in Guatemala and Colombia.
o A $5,500 grant supported small farmers in South Sudan.
o 105 women became self-employed in Malawi.
o 872 Presbyterian congregations purchased eco-palms for sustainable forestry and livelihoods.
o 152 people regained their land in Sri Lanka.
3. How to Participate:
o Typically received during Lent, each gift to OGHS supports hunger relief, development, and disaster assistance.
o Your contribution makes a difference in the lives of those in need. 100% of what is donated will go to the Mid-Tennessee Presbytery to be sent where it is needed.

Cooking oil
Rice
*Red beans, black beans

• People with social media savvy to help make a plan for getting the word out
• People with creative skills to help develop flyers, messaging, and thank you tokens

Financial Support:
As you may have noticed from our lengthy Mission section, we are involved in many projects in multiple ways. Some of our funding comes from the budgeted mission or other committee funds and some of it comes through specially designated funds from members or previous members of our congregation. If you would like to donate additional funds for a specific program, checks can be made to the following ongoing missions of EPC.
Community Garden
Gateway to Higher Education Scholarship
Crossroads Campus
Maple Village
Special Music Ministry events
Oasis
Please note on the memo line of your check which mission you intend to support.
If you are not able to attend worship service and still wish show your support for Emmanuel Church, you can contribute in the following ways:
• Online–send an electronic payment, your bank can help you set this up if you have questions.
• By Mail – our mailing address is EPC, 9770 Hwy 96, Nashville, TN 37221
• Through EPC’s website www.epcnashville.com or www.epcnashville.org Simply click on the “GIVE” button, then the “donate” button, to donate via PayPal or debit/credit card. This can be a one-time donation or can be set up as a monthly donation, although currently, this is not working, see below.
In regards to the PayPal online donation function:
We now have access to the PayPal account which was part of the problem, but we still must get the donation button function working again on our website. Frustrations and aggravations are duly noted. If it helps any, they are equally shared by others.
Current donations should be made by mailing a check to the church or sending an online payment through your banking payment function. (Or in person, wink, wink)!

Inquirers of all ages:
• Please reach out to Pastor Jane about what it means to be baptized, to be confirmed in the church (if you have already been baptized) or to join the church.
• Lent begins next week on Wednesday February 14th. Pastor Jane will offer a Lenten service complete with the marking of a cross on one’s forehead if you so choose. This is done as a way to pronounce the importance of Jesus Christ in your life.
• After the Lenten service is complete, there will be a meal served and a short Lectio Divina which is comprised of short bible readings, contemplation and a time to listen to what has turned out in past times to be deep meaningful conversations. At 7 pm there will be a short simple meal served.
• Please let Jane know if you are willing to bring one of the Lenten meals for sharing. You can reach her at 615.818.9727.
-
• The children, big and small, (all those under 18!) are invited to participate in a special practice time for something being planned on Palm Sunday.

Hats off to John D for stepping up and agreeing to pick up the lumber and building the requested new garden boxes. That gives all the rest of y’all an excuse to go home and relax after next Sunday’s service.
The kids still need items to keep doing preliminary plantings and to prep for future gardening success. If you have any of the following, we could use them. Please put on a table in the pavilion.
clear 2-liter soda bottles with lids 1½ quart ice cream containers
½ gallon milk jugs (clear or not) w lids any 2’ or 3’ pieces of scrap gutter
old pool noodles of any length Large yogurt or sour cream containers
more toilet paper rolls odd or left-over mismatched socks
Thank you.
Success! Elizabeth’s tiny little tomato sprout. I bet it will produce the best tasting ones you ever ate! It will go in the garden after temps are consistently warmer.

•Building and Grounds:
Due to the success of last year’s gardening efforts, we need 3 more plots. If you can help do some sawing and hammering after church on Sunday March 24th, it would be oh so greatly appreciated. Lunch provided. All supplies provided but a circular saw or two and extra tape measures would be nice. Bring your own hammer and safety goggles. See Faith for details.
Also needed for new seedlings:
Large yogurt or sour cream containers clear 2-liter soda bottles
½ gallon milk jugs (clear or not) ½ quart ice cream containers
old pool noodles of any length any 2’ or 3’ pieces of scrap gutter
If you have any of these items, please bring to the children’s classroom. Thank you.
